How much of a holiday?

If you’re self-employed or run your own business how much of holiday can you really have?

What happens to your business when you go away?

I fully admit I can’t switch off completely – if I couldn’t keep my eye on my emails I would get very twitchy! I rarely answer them but ‘need’ to know what is going on. If I couldn’t do this I’d imagine all sorts!

Luckily I do have a small team now so know the business is in safe hands and can have a more relaxed holiday nowadays.

But what do you do if it’s just you running the business? No easy answer to this one. Technology does help, back to reading email on your phone! But you can also pick a ‘quieter’ time in your business year, make sure you have clear out of office messages and possibly employ the services of an answering service. Another option is a virtual assistant to cover your holiday time.

Make sure your clients have plenty of warning of your absence and make sure all projects are up to date.

It is hard but not impossible with a bit of planning. And that holiday is important for you and your family so it’s worth it!

Agree with everything. We do make time to go away and leave others to hold the fort. I always take some with me though. If you fancy a holiday with us at Coombe Mill we have full wi fi as I know just how important it is for a small business to stay in touch.

I quite agree Fiona, if you know you’re going to have to check your emails then checking that WiFi is available – and at what cost – is vital. You’ve thought of everything!
